The Iriomote Station, located on Iriomote Island,is surrounded by broad-leaved evergreen andmangrove forests. This station includes four researchgroups (Coral Reef Ecology and Systematics Study,Mangrove Study, Biodiversity Study, BioproductionStudy and Forest Resource Science). This stationhas been playing a central role as a research basefor mangrove ecosystems. The station was foundedas a branch station of the Faculty of Agriculture,University of the Ryukyus in 1971. In 1994 whenTropical Biosphere Research Center was established,the former station was integrated into the center.

The Facilities of this station, including thedormitory, are available to foreign and domesticresearchers and students. The Iriomote stationconducts intensive courses for undergraduate andgraduate students. The station is also involvedin various training courses organized by JapanInternational Cooperation Agency (JICA), SuperScience High School (SSH) etc.

A two-storied dormitory is available for all visitorsfor research. It is also used to lodge the participantsof courses and meetings. The dormitory is capableof accommodating 10 researchers and 40 students. Total of more than 3000 users stay this dormitory inone year.
