During the fiscal year 2012, Dr Sinniger received a Sasakawa Scientific ResearchGrant from The Japan Science Society for his research on “Investigation of deep reef anthozoan diversity using DNA barcording “. With the collaboration of several members of Sesoko Station he studied the diversity of Anthozoa, mainly scleractinian corals, in the upper mesophotic zone (35 – 55m depth) near Motobu in the Northern part of Okinawa. On April 26, 2013 Dr. Sinniger received the Sasakawa Scientific Research Award for this research at the ANA InterContinental Hotel in Tokyo where he presented his research results publicly.
The first results of this research were also published earlier this year in the international academic journal “Coral Reefs” 32:153.
